The ability to earn a profit is what makes the free enterprise system viable. Without the prospect of earning a profit, there is no motivation for would-be business owners and entrepreneurs to put in all the time and effort required to run a successful enterprise. A free-market economy, like the one in the US, would crumble without the hardworking people that supply its goods and services in exchange for their profits. It certainly is the cornerstone of any free market economy.
