Teaching Philosophy

Statement about my teaching philosophy:

  1. My teaching philosophy is based on selecting the proper textbook and following it thoroughly. I develop a detailed course syllabus based on the textbook and the course outcomes. The syllabus covers everything the student needs to know about the course, including; a listing of all the homework assignments and projects, schedule of topics covered, exams dates, and grade distribution.
  2. I follow the text book or curriculum very closely – and do not believe in teaching a course with out a text book. At the end of the semester, if students express valid dissatisfaction with the textbook, I select a different selection the following semester.
  3. I completely develop the course in D2L before the semester begins. The course content includes the syllabus, grade book, power point, the homework/project problems and drop boxes for assignment submittal. I post weekly announcements covering assignment due dates, topics covered during the week, and the due dates for the chapter exam. The due dates are also reflected in the drop boxes.
  1. I task a weekly homework assignment from the text book, and I spend a lot of time grading. If the text book has quality exercises, the homework will be assignment from the text. I perform all homework myself in advance to discover any issue prior to being assigned, and discuss all the homework in the classroom.
  2. I encourage students to ask questions – and if they don’t, I pose questions and request answers. I observe students that do not pay attention, and challenge them to be involved. I give students full freedom to ask question and address their concerns.
  3. I grade all homework and exams before the next class meeting. I write feedback on the drop box and provide students the chance to resubmit, if they have not submitted the required files. I keep detailed records of, including attendance, and encourage students to check their grade book regularly.
  4. I never arrive late to class, or finish a class early. My policy is to be in the classroom 10 minutes before the class begins, and finish exactly on time. I avoid missing a class period due to any reason.
  5. I do not discuss topics beyond the course material during the class period. I do offer assistance to students who are taking course with other faculty members, especially in the lab.
  6. I constantly seek feedback from students, and adjust my teaching style based on their feedback. I encourage them to complete the college evaluation in addition to the Cisco course feedback.
  1. Grades distribution spreadsheet is available to all students on D2L, and they can see their grades compared to others (student names are hidden).
  1. I use data projectors in all my courses, in addition to routers and switches. I prefer teaching different courses during the semester rather than multiple sections of the same course. I prefer to teach courses which involve problem solving.
