Reflection

The 5th-grade lesson plan was very rewarding for me. My passion is to educate people of all ages how to achieve good oral hygiene. The 5th graders were great because they had a lot of questions and they were very curious. I loved seeing their eagerness to learn about my favorite topic. However, with success comes its own set of challenges. In our clinic, I mainly talk to adults about tobacco and oral hygiene. I had to reevaluate my lesson plan several times to make it fit for a 5th grader. Going through the steps of this competency did guide me along to create a successful lesson plan for my targeted audience.

The Service Learning project that was completed during my last semester created a love for working with others outside of your community. I appreciated that this project had to be non-dental related. This was a chance for me to learn from other people and learn new ways to help those who are in need. Although I love helping people as a dental hygienist, I also love helping people by providing basic life necessities. I can always count on learning more about the community through volunteering.
