Introduction to Content Strategies

WEB 123 Content Management System Strategies focuses on the importance of how digital media is created, displayed and managed on websites and social media. Content strategy is the practice of managing content throughout its lifecycle and putting a high level of thought into how and why it is being presented so that it can be as beneficial as possible to both the organization producing it as well as the consumer. Meghan Casey of The Content Strategy Toolkit gives her definition of content strategy as something that “helps organizations provide the right content, to the right people, at the right times, for the right reasons.” The most important part of content strategy is defining the purpose for any content. This leads into the financial aspect and business goals of a company and also the and overall satisfaction of a consumer trying to effectively locate the most relevant content. Content strategy has four main categories which are substance, structure, workflow and governance. Structure deals with defining what content should be produced and how it can be meaningful, structure is how the content is organized and presented, workflow is the act of creating and maintaining the content and governance is strategically thinking about content decisions. Presenting content in a visually appealing manner goes a long way in attracting visitors and keeping them interested. In the WEB 123 course, we are using WordPress as a content management system which gives us a foundation and platform on which to build our professional portfolios. Content management systems have a more visual environment and interface which means the focus can be placed on displaying our previous work as a showcase.
