Learning About Social Media Platforms
Part 1: What did you learn? What else do you want to know?
Since I did not grow up with technology the way my children did, I do not know all the ins and outs of the various social media platforms.
This week in the beginning lessons on Hootsuite Academy, I was able to learn interesting facts about demographic usage as well as additional marketing capabilities of each site.
For example. Facebook is the most downloaded mobile app with over 1 billion users. It has an advertising program that allows you to target specific demographics.
Twitter is most used by millennials and young professionals, and Instagram’s largest demographic is 18-29.
LinkedIn is the largest professional network with students and recent grads making up the largest demographic. I was not aware that businesses use LinkedIn for marketing, sales leads and as a screening tool for potential candidates.
I found it interesting to learn that YouTube reaches more 18-49-year-olds than any cable network in the U.S. Pinterest on the other hand, is largely used by women.
Finally, I learned that Snapchat users share 2.5 billion snaps daily and that the app was intentionally designed to be difficult to learn with the idea of other users teaching you.
After watching the brief synopsis of the listed platforms, I am interested in learning how the advertising programs are designed, the specific analytics that are provided as well as how targeted these programs are.
Part Two-Client Project
I selected to help my son Tyler promote his music as my client project. I am excited to help him with this to see where his dreams may take him.
His current mission is to grow a page on Facebook dedicated to his music and gain followers that will then click to watch his YouTube videos and purchase the music from his website.
He currently has a YouTube channel with 34 followers. He does not regularly post or interact, so I feel that is an area we can improve upon.
He also has a Facebook page dedicated to his music with 101 followers. He does not make regular posts.
I feel that making regular posts to his Facebook page as well as leveraging music teasers would help get more traffic to all sites. I feel that he should use Twitter as well to help grow his following.
