Parents with Deaf Children Project

We have one student in the Enactus JCCC who has a passion for working with the deaf. One need tentatively identified as a potential project is the need for funding the cost for parents of deaf children to attend workshop conducted at the Olathe School for the Deaf. It was brought to our attention that some parents who would like to attend these workshops can’t afford to. This project will develop a plan to find funding for the parents of one or more student to attend a summer workshop.

Student Career Fair

Last Spring, JCCC Enactus students surveyed the JCCC campus to identify specific needs of JCCC students. High on the list was: assistance finding and landing jobs related to their major.  To help address this need, Enactus is working with the JCCC Ambassadors and the Marketing Department to coordinate events related to this need. Enactus and the Marketing Department will host a networking event for their respective advisory boards and students on October; Enactus is working with the JCCC Ambassadors to host a career fair and speaker in November; more events will be planned throughout the year.

Las Pintas Intro

Last year, the JCCC Enactus students began looking at how they can provide assistance to the JCCC nursing program’s project in Las Pintas, Mexico. The nursing program has led a health brigade to Las Pintas, Mexico each year for the last 18 years. During their week in Las Pintas, nursing students, faculty and alumni provide health services and education in this underserved community. In Spring 2015, the Enactus faculty advisor and two students joined the brigade with the intent of assessing what Enactus could do to provide assistance and guidance in an way that might lead to more economic sustainability.

Two students and the faculty advisor will accompany the nursing program again in Spring 2016. Prior to going to Las Pintas, those students will provide assistance to the nursing students gathering supplies and fundraising as well as continue to explore ways to help the economic development of Las Pintas.  While in Las Pintas, the main focus of the team will be economic development.

Don’t let the words economic development scare you…basically, it means help them find ways to create income opportunities to increase their standard of living. The first group identified some possibilities…if you are seriously interested in helping expanding on what they found, join the project team and apply for this opportunity.

Nutrition Club Partnership

Last year, JCCC Enactus partnered with the JCCC Nutrition Club to work with a food desert located in Clearview City, Kansas. With help from a Unilever grant, students completed an inventory of food items available in stores accessible to the individuals living in zip code 66019. Students in the Nutrition Club then developed menus which meet MyPlate nutritional guidelines and average SNAP benefits. Residents of the area were provided with the menus and recipes. This year, the group plans to continue their work with Good Natured Family Farms, a marketing alliance of over 100 local family farms.  This alliance has done a lot of work with urban KC food deserts, and has grant funding to continue this work in communities like Clearview City.
