Reflection: Business Marketing Simulator
This game my team and I participated in was a marketing simulator where we where in charge of all aspects of a bike company. Brand name, logo, brands, finances, advertising and so much more that happens in the behind the scenes of a company. I think this project was one of the coolest and realist assignments i’ve completed within my time here at JCCC.
After reviewing the scorecard, Tread Light Bike Co. did exceptionally well. Overall, we had 70% of the market share and fun fact, we were the only team to have a store in every single location possible. I also might add, our competitors teams each had 4 members. My team consisted of only 3. Danny, Melissa, and myself and I seriously couldn’t have asked for a better team. We all worked super hard, and our dedication speaks for itself. Overall, we came in 1st place. During this project, I was elected to be VP of Advertising and VP of Internet Marketing. I created ads, placed inserts strategically in local and regional media, social media and also was in charge of creating web pages for the brands that target relevant keywords. We reached a large amount of consumers using organic SEM and had significant help when paid SEM came along. We 100% achieved our goals and objectives. At the beginning our team decided we wanted to be the overall leader in the carbon fiber bike industry in every quarter. We did just that. Knowing what I do now, I wouldn’t change much other than we started to invest into our future later than others. I don’t think this really impacted us much after seeing the results we were having.
Overall, I learned that communication and adaptability is SO important. My team was the absolute best about this. We had a text group chat and were all so responsive and supported each other when we had questions..I think this ultimately led to our success. Adaptability is also key in running a successful business. From my real life experiences owning a business, being able to adapt on the fly to constantly changing markets and consumer demands can ultimately change the direction your company. I benefited from this simulator because for the first time, I had to work with a team and collaborate to run a company. In my business, I run things solely myself and only have myself to rely on. It was an awesome experience getting to hear ideas from my team that I may never had thought of. A lesson I can take into the business world is that teamwork makes the dreamwork! 🙂
Not normally a bragger, and I wouldn’t want that to come across as so, but I am so proud of my team and what we have accomplished. On top of a 1st place trophy we also received a badge of Top 10% Worldwide. According to the badge criteria, tens of thousands of students play Marketplace simulations worldwide. Placing in the top 10% of all teams that have played a given simulation over many years is an achievement that reflects an extraordinary level of business acumen and work ethic. This is a huge accomplishment and it needs to be shared!
